Faculty News

Dr. Ginevra Courtade Joins WVU Faculty

The Department of Special Education is pleased to welcome Dr. GInevra Courtade as its newest faculty member. Dr. Courtade earned the Ph.D. in special education with an emphasis in severe disabilities at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and formerly taught students with significant cognitive disabilities in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public School System in Charlotte, North Carolina. She will be teaching required courses in the Severe/Multiple Disabilities and Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education Programs. (More about Dr. Courtade)

Dr. Ann Richards is Recipient of Heebink Award for Service

Ann Richards, Associate Professor of Special Education, was named a recipient of the Ethel and Gerry Heebink Award for Service to West Virginia. The award recognizes a WVU faculty member who has provided distinguished service to the state. Dr. Richards was cited for her work on behalf of Special Olympics West Virginia, a sponsor of sports training and competition for children and adults with mental challenges. Low Vision/Blindness Certification and Degree Program Reactivated

WVU is once again offering its graduate program leading to certification and/or master's degree in Low Vision/Blindness. The first cycle will begin in Fall 2007. More information is available at Low Vision/Blindness Program.

School Leadership for Special Education is NEW Program Option in Doctoral Program Emphasis in Special Education

The WVU Doctoral Program Emphasis in Special Education now offers a program option that allows students to prepare themselves for careers in administration and supervision in special education or disability services. More information is available at Doctoral Program Emphasis in Special Education.

Opportunities for Financial Support

NEW!!! Stipend Reimbursements Now Available in Autism Spectrum Disorders

In April 2007, the Department was awarded federal funding for Project STARS: Specialist Training in Autism for Rural Schools. This funding will support the certification and master's degree program in Autism Spectrum Disorders by providing FULL REIMBURSEMENT OF TUITION AND FEES to eligible students in this program who obtain an initial certification or an additional endorsement in this area. NEW!!! Full Scholarships Now Available for Doctoral Study in Special Education

In April 2007, the Department was awarded federal funding for Project FastTrack: An Intensive Special Education Doctoral Program to Prepare Teacher Educators. This funding will support the personnel preparation option in the doctoral program emphasis in special education by providing FULL WAIVER OF TUITION AND FEES PLUS $30,000 ANNUAL LIVING STIPEND to eligible students in this program option who engage in full time study on the Morgantown campus for two (2) calendar years. This funding will support the certification and master's degree program in Severe/Multiple Disabilities by providing FULL REIMBURSEMENT OF TUITION AND FEES to eligible students in this program who obtain an initial certification or an additional endorsement in this area.
