The Department of Special Education at West Virginia University has been preparing professional educators for posiitions in special education and disability services at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels for almost 50 years. Our dedicated faculty are available to assist you in preparing for a career working with children, adolescents or adults with many different exceptionalities. Our programs have earned awards for innovative delivery systems and faculty members have been nationally recognized for teaching excellence and leadership in the field.
In collaboration with the College of Human Resources and Education's Five Year Teacher Education Program, we offer a combined undergraduate and graduate program with initial certification in Elementary Education and a major and additional endorsement in special education in the area of Multicategorical Special Education. At the graduate level, we offer a series of ONLINE certification and master's degree programs in special education, with emphasis in the areas of autism spectrum disorders, early intervention/early childhood special education, gifted education, low vision/blindness, multicategorical special education, and severe/multiple disabilities. As part of the College's doctorate in Education, we offer a research-based doctoral degree program leading to an Ed.D. focusing on personnel preparation in special education to prepare future faculty members or school leadership for special education to prepare administrators ad supervisors. We are also pleased to collaborate with the Center for Excellence in Disabilities at West Virginia University, a part of Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, in offering an interdisciplinary certificate program in disability studies available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. (More about this program)
