Phase Two: Admission to Teacher-Education
and the Academic Major

In Phase Two, which usually occurs during the fourth semester, students apply for

  • formal admission to specific certification options in the teacher education program, and
  • admission to the major of the relevant content area degree program.

Because a limited number of students are accepted into the Teacher Education Program and because there are also enrollment limits for each certification option, admission is competitive.

As part of their preparation for Phase Two, students are expected to complete prescribed activities and attain stated levels of achievement. The portfolio application process allows students to demonstrate their successful accomplishment of these expectations.

For more detailed information about these aspects of the admission process:

Phase Two Portfolio Application

In the fourth semester, Pre-Education students who wish to enter a particular certification option in the teacher education program submit a portfolio of materials for review. This portfolio must include the following materials:

  • Evidence that the student has met the minimum standard on all sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or has had the test waived based on SAT or ACT scores.
    • Contact the Student Advising Office [PO Box 6122, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV 26506-6122, Phone: 304/293-3637 or 293-3983, email: bethany.ackley@mail.wvu.edu] for more detailed information about the PPST.
  • Evidence that the student has an overall college grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75
  • Evidence that the student has satisfactorily completed sixty hours of approved volunteer work experience
  • A paper on the volunteer work experience which documents critical reflection on the experience as it applies to teaching.
  • Reference letters which support admission and indicate the student's potential for success as a teacher may be included.
  • Evidence of completion of these courses with grades of C or better:

    1. Education Colloquium (EDUC 100)
    2. Professional Inquiry in Education (EDUC 200)

  • Evidence of completion of 59 hours of course work (Courses taken should be from the "major checklist" which is available in the Office of Student Advising.)

Phase Two Admission Criteria

Students must also adhere to the patterns prescribed in completing their subject specializations.

Portfolios submitted are reviewed by a committee of K-12 and WVU faculty and administrators.

Any student with a GPA of 2.75 (or better) who meets all other portfolio requirements and who has adhered to the patterns prescribed in completing their subject specializations is eligible to apply for admission.

Students who meet every standard will be ranked for admission to the certification option of their choice. If there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces available in a particular certification option, students will be ranked on the basis of overall portfolio rubric scores and admitted in order of descending scores until all available spaces have been filled.

Final decisions on admission will be made when fourth semester grades become available.
