Phase One: Admission to Pre-Education
In Phase One, students are admitted to the Pre-Education Phase of both
- the content area degree program
- the teacher education program
Because this is a dual degree program, students who are preparing to become teachers will simultaneously pursue two degrees:
- a BA or BS in the subject area they plan to teach
- an MA in education
Admission criteria are somewhat different for incoming freshmen and transfer students.
To Be Admitted as an Incoming Freshman
To Qualify: Incoming freshmen students may qualify either through their high school grade point average (GPA) or through scores on national standardized college entrance tests (ACT or SAT). To be admitted to the program as an incoming freshman, a student must have:
OR
an ACT score of 23 (or better)
OR
an SAT score of 1030 (or better)
The Process: Students who apply to the program as incoming freshmen and as part of their initial application to West Virginia University should indicate elementary education or secondary education and the subject area they plan to teach on their application form. Both the University and the Department of Educational Theory and Practice will notify students of their acceptance to pre-education. Students who have been admitted to pre-education will meet with their Education adviser during orientation and are advised through the Office of Student Advising, located in Room 501 Allen Hall.
To Be Admitted as a Transfer Student
To Qualify: Full-time students who wish to transfer to Pre-Education from another major within West Virginia University or from another institution may qualify by earning an overall GPA of 2.75 (or better) at West Virginia University and/or the university or college from which they transferred.
Students who do not meet the criteria above for admission as incoming freshmen and who have a GPA between 2.50 and 2.74 may have their record reviewed by the Teacher Education Faculty Admissions Committee for possible acceptance into Pre-Education
The Process: Students who apply to transfer into the program from another major at West Virginia University or from another college or university should contact the Office of Student Advising [Note: until office has actual web site for link, include: (304/293-3637 or 293-3983) and the new generic email address for that office] for a transcript evaluation and determination of teacher education program eligibility.
Expectations during Pre-Education Phase of the Teacher Education Program
Successful preparation for the next admission phase is based upon completing expectations of the Pre-Education Phase and completing a portfolio which documents the completion of those expectations. In preparation for admission to Phase Two of the Teacher Education Program, students must:
- Successfully complete all sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Test
- Complete sixty hours of volunteer experiences with students of the age they plan to teach, be recommended by supervisors of these experiences, and complete a paper reflecting on these volunteer experiences
- Complete a minimum of 59 hours of approved university coursework
- Achieve a 2.75 overall GPA with no grade below a "C" on all work completed in professional education
- Complete successfully EDUC 200 and all its prerequisites
- Meet program standards for academic performance
- Submit portfolio at the end of Year Two (see Phase Two: Portfolio Application)
- Students may, in addition, provide written recommendations supporting their applications.
