Admission to Teacher Education

Because the program of study for the Benedum Collaborative Model of Teacher Education is more rigorous and demanding than previous professional preparation programs, students entering the program are expected to exceed the academic characteristics of the typical undergraduate student within West Virginia University. In addition to meeting academic criteria, any student who seeks admission to the program is expected to have a high degree of commitment to becoming a professional educator.

Students who wish to pursue this program must first meet current requirements for admission to West Virginia University.

The admissions information below is for students pursuing the five-year, dual-degree teacher education program. Three Phases of Admission

Admission to the WVU Teacher Education Program occurs in three phases. Click on each phase for more detailed information about admission requirements and procedures.

Phase One: Admission to Pre-Education (Years One and Two)

During this first phase students are initially admitted, either directly from high school or as transfer students with some college experience, to pre-education courses and to the pre-major phase of the content degree.

Phase Two: Admission to Teacher Education and the Academic Major (Years Three and Four)

Typically in the fourth semester students apply for admission to the teacher education program, prior to their assignment to a specific professional development school.

Phase Three: Admission to the Master's Program (Year Five)

Admission to the master's degree occurs at the end of the eighth semester in the program, prior to the full-time internship experience.

Formal Admission to the Teaching Profession: Certification/Licensing
