West Virginia University

HR&E Office of teacher education

Welcome to Teacher Education in the College of Human Resources & Education at the West Virginia University.  For more than 75 years, the College has been committed to offering exemplary educational opportunities for teachers.  In addition to having one of the most respected teacher education preparation programs in the nation—The Benedum Collaborative Model of Teacher Education (The Five Year Program)—the College is recognized for its service to the state, teaching, and research as well as for its professional development partnerships with practicing teachers and educational professionals.

The teaching profession in the United States faces unique challenges in the 21st century.  Our technological age requires citizens who can apply knowledge, reason analytically, and solve problems.  Additionally, as American society becomes increasingly diverse, schools must serve students who come from many backgrounds and cultures and who bring with them a wide range of ability and interests.  Educators, policy makers, and the general public are engaged in national debates about high performance standards for students and for teachers.  Teacher Education at West Virginia University is committed to addressing issues of technology, diversity, and standards in all our programs of study.

The College of Human Resources & Education Office of Teacher Education provides information, support, and resources to faculty and students engaged in professional education programs that lead to certification of teachers and other educational professionals, such as counselors, speech-language pathologists, and school administrators.  Our aim is also to work in partnership with faculty colleagues to address program, practice, research, and policy issues relevant to the preparation of teachers and other educational specialists.
