PRAXIS Tests Required in WV

The West Virginia qualifying scores , which are listed below, are currently under review at the state level. To be sure to access the most recent qualifying scores, check the latest information on the West Virginia Department of Education's web site.

If you are planning to teach in another state, be sure to check the required qualifying scores for that state. One source of this information is The Praxis Series List of State by State Requirements

Information about the required PRAXIS tests is grouped into three sections:

The PPST (required by the end of semester 4)

Content Tests (required before the start of Semester 9/the Internship)

The PLT (required for certification in West Virginia)

The PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test)

Documentation of a passing score on all three sections of the PPST is required for admission into the Benedum Collaborative Model of Teacher Education at the end of semester four.

While the test can currently be waived in West Virginia if the student can provide evidence of an ACT score of 26 or higher or an SAT score of 1125 or higher (if taken after April 1995), many other states require that the PPST be taken for certification. If you think there is any possibility that you may seek certification in another state, you may want to consider taking the PPST even if your ACT or SAT scores are high enough to waive the requirement.

The PLT (Principles of Learning and Teaching) Test

Students must receive a passing score on the PLT in order to receive certification in West Virginia.

Students take the version of the PLT that corresponds to their certification. Although it is recommended that elementary education majors take the PLT K-6, they may opt to take the PLT 5-9.

Some states require that teachers with elementary/middle school endorsements take both the PLT K-6 and the PLT 5-9.
