New Members Join HR&E's Hall of Fame

Six new members, Beverly J. Bieniek, Donald R. Cotten, Barbara Judy, William G. Monahan, Beth E. Musser, and Kathleen Hawk Sawyer have been inducted into the College's Hall of Fame. Ms. Bieniek was also named the College's Distinguished Alumna for 2005. Dean Anne H. Nardi presented a unique gift of handcrafted West Virginia glass to each new Hall of Fame member at an induction ceremony and reception in March.

Beverly J. Bieniek has been a special education teacher and consultant in both the Pennsylvania and West Virginia public schools. Currently she is director of special education and pupil personnel services for the Laurel Highlands School District in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

During his years in a variety of roles at the University of Mississippi, Donald R. Cotten was instrumental in increasing the external funding for educational projects in Mississippi from $2,000,000 to $60,000,000. Currently, he is an independent contractor assisting universities and private sector entities.

Barbara Judy was director of the Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance for the state of West Virginia and was a driving force in the widely acclaimed Job Accommodation Network (JAN) for over 20 years. Ms. Judy has also been elected to the National Hall of Fame for Persons with Disabilities.

During his 10 years as dean of the College of Human Resources & Education, William G. Monahan was a prolific writer in his field, improved communication with external constituencies, and was instrumental in initiating many educational innovations.

Beth E. Musser has been a leader in literacy education and, as dean of the West Liberty State College School of Education, was instrumental in establishing the West Liberty State College/Ohio County Professional Development School partnership.

A recipient of numerous national awards, Kathleen Hawk Sawyer was the first woman to be named director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She held the position for 11 years before retiring in 2003.

These six new members joined the initial group of Hall of Fame members, who were inducted in 2004. The initial members are also pictured at left.
