First Hall of Fame Members and Distinguished Alumnus Selected

The induction of the first College of Human Resources & Education Hall of Fame members was a Commencement Weekend highlight this year. Of the six inductees, five were alumni: Gloria Salucci Cunningham, Jeanne Marcum Gerlach, Edward C. Keller III, Alfred N. Renzella, and A. Lynn Williams. Former West Virginia governor Gaston Caperton was named the sixth member of this year’s Hall of Fame.

Alfred N. Renzella received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Renzella developed and implemented a successful behavior management program for special education students and is currently the Director of Special Education and Attendance for Marshall County Schools in West Virginia.

During his two terms as Governor of West Virginia, Gaston Caperton spearheaded an $800 million school building program which constructed 58 new schools and renovated 780 schools. He is currently the President and CEO of the New York City-based College Board.

Gloria Salucci Cunningham, who was professionally associated with WVU for 27 years, retired as assistant professor emerita from HR&E in 1985. She has continued her work with the College as an active alumni volunteer.

During Edward C. Keller, III’s 26 years as a science teacher in the Monongalia County Schools, he received numerous awards for his innovative teaching and service to elementary, middle, and secondary school students.

Jeanne Marcum Gerlach is Dean of the College of Education at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) where, under her leadership, the Center for Professional Teacher Education at UTA has become a College of Education. She has recently been appointed Associate Vice President for K-16 Education.

A. Lynn Williams founded the Speech-Language Pathology Program at Appalachian Regional Hospital, in Beckley, and is currently a professor in communicative disorders at East Tennessee State University.

Alumni, faculty, staff, and other friends of the College are invited to submit nominations for the second group of Hall of Fame members. Nominations are due October 1. For information about eligibility and requirements for nomination, please call 304-293-5703 or email HREadmn@mail.wvu.edu.

The HR&E Hall of Fame was established to recognize and honor the many outstanding graduates of West Virginia University’s College of Human Resources and Education and other exceptional individuals who have contributed to the vision and mission of the College or who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields, disciplines, positions, and/or occupations.
