Rehabilitation Counseling

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements of the University, the College of Human Resources & Education, and the Rehabilitation Counseling Education Program include the following:

  • A baccalaureate degree with course work in appropriate areas
  • A minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 2.8, based on a 4.0 system (students with a lower grade point average and otherwise exceptional credentials may be admitted provisionally). Students with an undergraduate grade point average of below 2.5 cannot be admitted.
  • Graduate Record Exam scores (minimum 450-500 on Verbal)
  • Three letters of reference
  • Completion of the application for Graduate Admission to West Virginia University
  • Completion of the departmental application to the Rehabilitation Counseling Program

The initial screening decision is based upon this information as well as considering the applicant's previous work or related experiences related to persons with disabilities. Applicants are then interviewed by a member of our program faculty. Final decisions about admission are based on both the requirements and the interview process.

Please note: GRE scores are a mandatory part of our admissions process. You will not be interviewed unless you have scheduled to take the test. You will not be considered for final acceptance into the program without the GRE. Provisional acceptances pending the GRE will not be granted.

Deadlines for Applications:

  • On campus students apply for fall admission. First review of applications begins March 15. A second review of any subsequent applications is done April 15 if there is available space in the program.
  • E-campus students apply for spring admission. First review of applications begins October 15. A second review is done November 15.
