Who Should Take This Course?
  • Teachers who are interested in teaching or improving their teaching of the Holocaust in such courses as U. S. History, World History, Government, World Cultures, Contemporary Problems, Literature, and Art and Art History
  • Teachers who would like to offer a Holocaust Education course as an elective at the middle or high school level
  • English education or language arts teachers who are interested in teaching about the Holocaust or who anticipate reading trade books on the Holocaust with their students

  • Usable lesson plans for teaching your students about genocide and the Holocaust

Holocaust Education:
Issues & Strategies

An On-Line Course

Starting July 5, 2005

Content:

Content for the course includes increasing personal knowledge about the Holocaust through readings and discussions and the examination of issues related to teaching about the Holocaust and genocide K-12. The final project in the course includes the writing of lesson plans for teaching about the Holocaust and genocide and an analysis of the importance of teaching about genocide in K-12 units and/or courses entirely devoted to such topics. Those who enroll must be experienced in writing lesson plans.

Credit:
Flexible credit for C&I 694A is available. Completing the on-line course with its assignments, including constructing a two-week unit on the Holocaust, fulfills the 3-credit option. Students who wish to receive a certificate from the West Virginia Holocaust Commission may enroll in a 6-credit option that involves additional readings and developing plans for a six-week study of the Holocaust.
