OUTSTANDING RESEARCHER AWARD
College of Human Resources and Education
2008
The Award. The award is given for outstanding research and scholarly activity over a two-year period by a faculty member in the College of HR&E. The award is to be distinguished from the WVU Benedum Awards, which are normally given for career-long research records. This award is for the most recent 2-year period: January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2007. Each year the Research, Service, & Professional Development Committee may select one faculty member to receive an award of $1,000.00.
Definition of Excellence in Research. Examples of research and scholarly activity may include the following: developing new information, critically examining new and/or old information, and writing scholarly manuscripts for articles, chapters, or books or externally funded grant(s) with substantial research potential. These three examples are not exhaustive. For these three examples and similar work, the report(s) of the research must be intended for a professional audience and must be available through publication in a book, a refereed journal, or electronic media. “In-press” manuscripts will not be considered. The research must consist of at least one publication or product of outstanding quality that extends the boundaries of knowledge in the relevant discipline.
Eligibility for Award. Tenured, tenure-track, and research-equivalent faculty in the College of HR&E are eligible for the Outstanding Researcher Award, which is given without regard to departmental or disciplinary affiliation, core area, or type of research and scholarly activity. In all cases, the contribution must list West Virginia University as the nominee’s academic affiliation, no matter where the research and/or publication had been completed.
Period Covered by Award. The period covered by the award is January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2007.
Procedures.
1. A contribution cannot earn more than one award. The following rules apply: (a) the same contribution cannot be resubmitted after it has earned an award, and (b) a co-authored contribution can earn only one award. For a co-authored contribution, one author may be nominated for an award or co-authors may be nominated separately. Nominations can be made by using the attached nomination form.
2. Eligible faculty members may be nominated for an award in three ways:
(a) They may be nominated by another member of the faculty at West Virginia University, College of HR&E;
(b) They may be nominated by a departmental committee charged with making such nominations; or
(c) They may nominate themselves.
In the first two cases, faculty members will be notified by the College of their nomination and of the deadline for submitting their applications. In the case of self-nomination, the faculty member should submit his or her materials to the Office of the Dean by the deadline for receipt of completed applications.
3. The application must include the following materials:
(a) The contribution to be considered.
(b) A narrative, with any necessary attachments, documenting the context and importance of the contribution (e.g., the nature and scope of the scientific or social problem addressed, or previous related works published by the nominee, the place of the contribution in the development of critical trends in the discipline, the reason for considering the contribution outstanding, documentation of the quality of the contribution such as favorable reviews.)
(c) An updated curriculum vita.
(d) Two letters of support from professional colleagues familiar with the research. We encourage one of these letters to be from a colleague who is not affiliated with West Virginia University.
4. Where an application or nomination is based on an article or articles published during the eligibility period, the Committee should be provided with a list of the nominee’s earlier articles relating directly to the nominated research. In reaching its decision, the Committee may or may not solicit outside opinions from professionals familiar with the areas of research.
5. The HR&E Research, Service, & Professional Development Committee will determine the awardee. A single Outstanding Researcher Award may be given in any given year; however, the Committee may choose not to select an awardee.
6. The recipient of the award will receive recognition at the faculty meeting and the College Convocation ceremony in May.
