LADDIE BELL DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
College of Human Resources and Education
2008
The Award. Dr. Laddie Reed Bell, former professor of Education Administration and Assistant Dean of the College of Human Resources and Education, worked throughout his career to bring to his native state the best opportunities that education can provide. Dr. Bell served both our institution and our state, fostering strong relationships between higher education and the field. It is, therefore, most fitting that the Award, in his name, recognize individuals within our College who have made exceptional contributions to the achievement of our mission and the development of our programs. To honor Dr. Bell and to recognize those who, like him, serve the students, the schools, and the citizens of West Virginia, the College of Human Resources and Education of West Virginia University offers the Laddie Reed Bell Distinguished Service Award. The Laddie Reed Bell Distinguished Service Award is accompanied by a cash award of $1,000. It is presented annually to an individual who has made notable contributions to service in the state of Virginia.
Definition of Distinguished Service. Distinguished service refers to exemplary activities that promote and enhance the productive interaction of College programs and that respond to the needs of individuals and groups within the State of West Virginia. Service activities are defined by the University and College in their guidelines for annual review and promotion and tenure of faculty.
Eligibility for Award. The award recognizes a College faculty member or administrator whose sustained service has facilitated the mission of the College of Human Resources and Education. Nominees must be full-time faculty members or administrators in the College of Human Resources and Education at West Virginia University.
Period Covered by Award. There is no defined time period covered by the award. It can be for a long-term sustained effort or exemplary accomplishments over a shorter time period.
Procedures.
1. Individuals may be nominated for this award by faculty, colleagues or other professionals in the field, or they may be self-nominated. Nominations can be made by using the attached nomination form. Faculty members will be notified by the College of their nomination and of the deadline for submitting their supporting documentation.
2. The supporting documentation must include the following materials:
(a) The contribution to be considered and the time period.
(b) A narrative with any necessary attachments documenting the context and importance of the contribution, e.g., the nature and scope of the service (related to the College mission and State of West Virginia), the reason for considering the contribution outstanding, and documentation of the quality of the contribution.
(c) An updated curriculum vita.
(d) Letters from two individuals that testify to the nature and contribution of the service.
3. The HR&E Research, Service, & Professional Development Committee will determine the awardee. A single nominee may be named for the Laddie Reed Bell Distinguished Service Award in any given year; however, the Committee may choose not to select an awardee.
4. The recipient of the award will receive recognition at the faculty meeting and College Convocation ceremony in May.
