FAQs

Pursuit of National Board Certification is extremely rigorous and time intensive.  Candidates have documented anywhere from 200 - 400 hrs of work on top of their daily teaching assignments. All candidates must complete ten portfolio entries.  Four are written portfolios and six are in the form of written assessment exercises given at a certified testing location.

The Portfolio:

Teachers seeking National Board Certification prepare a portfolio based on the National Board standards for particular certification areas.  Each candidate receives detailed instructions and materials on how to assemble a portfolio using current classes and students to provide evidence of accomplished teaching practice.  Some areas include videotapes of classroom activities; others ask teachers to collect  certain kinds of student data.  Written analysis of teaching reflected in the videotape or student work is required with each entry.  Teachers also document their work outside the classroom with families, colleagues and the community.

 The Assessment Center:

Six assessment questions are given at a certified assessment center which focus on pedagogy and content knowledge.  This is the second component of the National Board Certification assessment process.  Assessment centers for each certificate area will offer exercises for several weeks during the summer.  Teacher make reservations at an assessment center in their area where they complete written examinations.

How do I know if I am ready?

Do you go above and beyond not just in the classroom but also in the activities you choose outside of the school day?  Do those activities enhance your classroom, parental contacts, and student achievement?  Do you have 300-400 hours of time to dedicate to this process?  Do you have a support system at home or at work to help you?
