FAQs

Through the support of State Farm and the Benedum Collaborative candidates join a cohort to help support them in their efforts.  The Cohort holds regular class meetings which helps candidates stay on task and provides them with resources and information to help them be successful.

The Cohort leaders are two National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and they provide useful instruction on:

  •  following NBPTS policies
  • the application process
  • time management
  • writing for NBPTS
  • Construction of four written portfolios emphasizing best practice (2 are videotaped entries)
  • tips on assessment

Online mentors are also supplied to Cohort members. Cohort mentors, also NBCTs,  agree to provide extra support through:

  •  proofreading via email
  • offering advice

   * Mentors for National Board must abide by the rules and ethics developed by NBPTS to ensure the rigor of this program.

Materials are also distributed to Cohort members.

  • Each candidate receives a current Candidate's Guide to National Board Certification, an extremely useful publication endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA).
  • They also have access to a compiled list of online resources put together by past NBC candidates.

The cohort has maintained a  70% success rates for candidates since 2001.

By participating in the Cohort you may enroll for 6 hours of graduate credit from WVU.  Tuition is waived for the course and graduate fees can be reimbursed upon successful completion of the course by the WVDE.
