   Through the support of State Farm and West Virginia University's Benedum Collaborative candidates join a cohort to help support them in their efforts to pursue National Board Certification.

What is the mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)?

  • to establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do
  • to develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards
  • to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools

Who is eligible to participate in the cohort?

  • teachers who have at least three years of experience
  • teachers who possess a baccalaureate degree fro an accredited institution
  • teaches who hold a valid WV teaching license

What are the costs?

If you sign up early,

  • the $65 application fee
  • the $2,500 assessment fee
  • $600 in tuition and expenses

can be reimbursed by the WV Department of Education.  This currently applies to the first 200 applicants. 

Also, Candidate participation in the cohort can be documented for 6 hours of graduate credits for the fall and spring semesters from WVU (3 credits per semester). Tuition is waived but graduate fees will need to be paid to WVU Extended Learning.
