Secondary Education, MA
Science Emphasis

Our online Secondary Education, MA - Science Emphasis program provides opportunities for graduate study and research leading to the degree of Master of Arts (M.A.) for science teachers or persons who work in science education related situations with adolescents and adults. The purpose of the program is to provide academic experiences to increase skills in science education and curriculum development.

The program requires students to complete the following coursework:

C&I 604 School Curriculum for Classroom Teachers
C&I 605 21st Century Teaching and Learning
C&I 644* Secondary Science Methods*
C&I 648 Science, Technology and Society
C&I 649 History and Philosophy of Science Education
C&I 594 Seminar: Clinical Experience Capstone

*This course requires a one week residency at the WVU main campus during the Summer B session.

Students are required to complete ONE of the following three courses. The students advisor will help select the most appropriate course.

SCFD 620 Philosophy of Education
SCFD 640 History of American Education
Approved
C&I Course

C&I Course chosen in consultation with advisor

Students must also complete 15 hours of electives. Electives may be chosen from the following offerings or include other options at the discretion of the student's advisor.

Announcements of content area course options will be posted on a semester to semester basis as content courses become available. Please check this page or the course offering schedule page approximately two months prior to the beginning of each semester for further information.
If you are not already certified in Secondary Science the following content courses are required:

Content Area Prerequisits for Certification:
General Science (5 - Adult)
Biological Science (9 - Adult)
Chemistry (9 - Adult)
Physics (9 - Adult)

The precise nature of the electives taken will be determined through consultation with the student's advisor. This process is designed to create experiences that best meet the needs of each individual, emphasizing areas of need and/or interest.
